Never use a thin towel or worn-down rag to dry off your car. Any dirt, paint chips, or sand left on the surface will be ground in and mess with the finish. Depending on how well you washed and how windy it is outside, it can be akin to drying off with sandpaper. Use a soft, thick towel instead. Any scratchy debris is more likely to get trapped inside, not rubbed around on the paint.
