10 Symptoms & Signs of Bronchitis

2. Shortness of Breath

In the respiratory system, it is the job of the brachial tubes to deliver air to your lungs. However, due to the nature of bronchitis, these tubes can become inflamed, causing a mucus and phlegm build-up. During this time, your airways may be partially blocked, which is what leads to a feeling of shortness of breath.

While it is common to experience this feeling throughout the duration of your infection, it is most noticeable when the body is performing above-normal physical activities that require rapid breathing, such as exercise or sexual activity. Coughing and shortness of breath are two symptoms that typically go hand in hand as cough is often the body’s response to a shortness of breath, or a means for it to remedy to the cause.
